HOCKEY YESTERDAY

PROGRESS OF COMPETITION. LADIES’ GAMES AT PARK. MEN’S THURSDAY SECTION. The first ladies’ games to be played at Kensington Park this season were decided in the Whangarei Hockey Association’s competitions yesterday afternoon. The grounds were in good condition, No. 2 being better than No. 1, where the grass was slightly long, but this 'will be cut in time for the soven-a-side competition on the King’s Birthday. The ■weather was good in the earlier part of the afternoon, but later a heavy rain shower passed 'over, making things unpleasant for players and spectators alike. As is usual at tlio Park, there was a strong wind blowing—the ground is seldom free from a breeze—which would be cheeked if there were a shelter belt on the * far side of the race track to the north I of the hockey fields. Other games in the competition were played' a Maungakaramea and Onerahi. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Ladies A. Hinemoa -I, Wesley 0. Old Girls 1, Horn Hora 1. Maungakaramea .1, White Star 1. Ladies B. Portland 2, Onerahi 1. Men. United .‘l, Ramblers 2. Onerahi D, Bargain Store A WIN FOR HINBMOA. DEFEAT OF WESLEY. Hincmoa proved too strong for Wesley and came out winners by 4 goals to nil. In the first half play was more even than in the second, and at halftime Ilinemoa were only one goal to the good. Ilinemoa nearly scored soon, after the start, but the ball was hit out behind. Play was quiet and did not produce nuii'li sparkle. Wesley t-everal times had opportunities, but they lacked any effective combination and their hitting was lamentably weak at times. On one occasion Miss Cotter, who has not shown the form she produced last year so far, carried play to Wesley v s ciivle, and'Miss Forsyth, in attempting to clear, hit back, the ball nearly going into her own goal month. Ilinemoa were pressing and Miss T. 11 nlchins and Miss Dunn were responsible for some' good work. -Inst before half-lime Ilinemoa’s efforts were rewarded, when Miss T. Hutchins scor- J qd, following a penalty corner. Not long after the commencement of the second spell Miss Cotter scored, and a few minnles Infer Mins T. Hutchins netted again. Wesley were defending, but could not hold out the invaders. Before the end Miss Berghan had scored, and though Wesley were lighting in Hinemon’s circle at the last, the whistle sounded without further alteration to the tally: Ilinemoa 4, Wesley 0. Messrs Patterson and Simpson refereed. brawn game. OLD GIRLS AND HORA HORA. ' Old Girls and Hora Hora drew in their match at the Park. Horn Horn played a much Improved game, as compared with their meeting with Hinomoa last week, and kept Old Girls busy. For a time it looked as if they would win the day, but Old Girls.

equalised and neither side managed to add any further goal. The first ten minutes were very even, with Hora Hora always on the attack when the opportunity presented ,

itself. There was a halt when iSdiss Hirtzel was attended to for a..hhrd blow on the face. Miss Richards was playing an excellent game -for Hora Hora. Eventually the blues-had their chance and the ball went into the net off Miss Hirtzel, with the. others

■ rowding round. Heavy rain came on at this stage and the players were soon soaking. • *

In the eeeond half Old-Girls drew level when Miss Tibbits had a clear hit in, and some time later she nearly found the net again. However, when : the final whistle went, the teams were still equal.
