STOLE FROM TENT
LABOURER BEFORE COURT. IMPRISONMENT SENTENCE. A labourer, Richard .Tolrn Can tell, aged 25, appeared at the Whangarei Police Court this morning before Messrs H. C. Hemphill and IV; Reynolds, J’s.P. Cantoll was charged with breaking and entering at the Cove, Waipu, on April 2S, a tent owned by R. G. Clemo and stealing a grey blanket, a pair of serge trousers, two shirts, a. pair of denim trousers, two singlets, two face towels, an three pairs of woollen socks, the total value being £3 15/0. Accused was also charged with failure to comply with the terms of his release on probation granted at Opotiki on April 12. On this charge Cantoll was remanded until Monday and the other was reduced to common theft, oh the application of the police. J, H. McLeod, police constable stationed at Waipu said that following a complaint by Clemo he interviewed accused, who admitted taking the articles. He made a statement and said he was hard up and had no clothing. Ronald George Clemo said he was camping at Waipu and was absent on the day the articles were missed. He identified some of the clothing accused was wearing as his. Cantell pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. An order was made for the return of the property.
