WONTHAGGI STRIKERS TRADESPEOPLE BOYCOTTED. ‘•'BLACK" RETALIATION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received 9 a.in.) MELBOURNE, May 17. The coal miners at Wonthaggi, SO miles south-east of Melbourne, who have been on strike for some time, have organised communal services and are providing themselves with food and other necessities. The strikers are slaughtering their own meat and conducting butchery and grocery shopo, a hairdressing saloon and a •boot-repairing depot. As the result the local tradespeople are suffering, and their employees are losing their employment. Tliis is having a boo me rang effect on flic union’s financial resources, The shopkeepers ' have how declared the miners’ activities “black.”
Matters are nearing a climax, as 900 miners, who arc moderate, are demanding a special meeting to discuss a settlement. They say it is impossible to expect relief from the union or from employees of outside trades whose employers are experiencing a boycott.
