GWAVAS ABERDEEN ANGUS SALE
£13,143 8/- FOR 412 CATTLE AUSTRALIANS PURCHASE 35 HEAD Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report having conducted, in conjunction with Messrs Williams and Kettle, Ltd., the dispersal sale of the Gwavas Aberdeen Angus Stud, at Koparakore, Hawke’s Hay, on April 26 and 27. The stud was the best known in the Dominion, having been established in 1888, and maintained at a very high level through the continual importation of the best Scotch and English blood. New South Wales, Tasmanian and South Australian breeders were either present at the ringside or represented, and offered very keen competition for the best of the stock, thirty-live head—a record number —being purchased for export. All parts of the .Dominion were represented, and as a result of the sale the cattle have boon distributed throughout both Islands, Southland and Canterbury taking a considerable number to the South Island, while North Island buyers bought very largely, North and South Auckland, Manawam, Rangilikei, King Country, Gisborne and Taranaki bidding .up strongly against the big ringside of . local buyers. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., also bought fop overseas clients and for numerous .breeders in both islands. The overhead average for 412 head of cattle, the calves being counted separately, was £3l 18. A total of 312 cows and calves averaged £2B 1/2, 46 bulls £SB 4/-, and 54 heifers £3l 13/8. Sixteen head realised three-figure prices. The top price of 260 guineas was paid for the. six-year-old cow, Peony of Gwavas, a Royal Champion on two occasions, the purchaser, after- a keen contest with a New South Wales bidder, being Hr D. G. Forloug, of Bunnythorpc. Her .live-months-old bull calf went to the same buyer at .100 guineas. Sumach ot Gwavas, Hie supreme Royal Champion bull at the 1032 Manawalu Show, uoav rising six years, was purchased by Alcssrs Pitt Son and Badgery Ltd., Sydney, for the Now South Wales breeder, Mr Prank Bragg, ol; Scone, at the second highest price of Hie sale, 220 guineas. A second eow, Privet of Gwavas, six years old, which was Royal Champion at the recent Auckland Royal Show, also realised 200 guineas to the same bidder. Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, who were extensive buyers, secured the herd sire, Hori of Tantanc, seven years, at 175 guineas, and Hie president of the Aberdeen Angus Society, Mr L. A. P. Sherriff, of Taihape, paid 100 guineas for another of the sires used in the herd, Acute of Akitio, five yertrs. Three yearling bulls realised 110 guineas apiece and two, 105 guineas apiece, while the Royal Champion yearling heifer, Alma of Gwavas, realised 125 guineas, also going to New South Wales, the purchaser being Mr Wilfred Wade, who also bought other lots. Captain Cameron, of Tasmania, was another active biddet, and his principal purchase was tlie two-year-old heifer, Hura of Gwavas, a daughter of the champions, Sumach and Peony of Gwavas. Bidding right through the sale was exceedingly brisk, an average of over forty lots being sold each hour. Many now herds of Aberdeen Angus will be founded as a result of tlie. sale.
