Private advice has been received of | the death in Melbourne of Mr Herbert Job'll Pither, aged 6G, who was a prominent cyclist in the early days, being Australian and New Zealand champion in 1594 and 1895, defeating A. A. Zimmerman at Sydney. He also built and flew at Riverton one of the first aeroI idanes to be flown in New Zealand. I Later ho made pioneer flights with it. j In .Australia he was noted as a highly skilled'mechanic. He had built a motor car and marine engines. t MR A. W. MITCHELL. The death has occurred in the Christchurch Hospital of Mr Arthur William Mitchell, aged 7S, the oldest resident of the Chatham Islands, where Ji2 settled in 1577. He was a member of Hie Chatham Islands Jockey Club and oilier bodies for a long period.
