GRAVE ACCUSATION
A KAWAKAWA CASE. WITNESS ILL IN COURT. (Per Press Association.^Cenyright.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Two charges of unlawful carnal knowledge wore preferred against Eddie Reyland (33); before Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday. The offences were alleged to have taken place at Kawakawa on November 2 and November 9, against a girl of 14 years and "> months. There were alternative charges -of indecent assault. The prosecution was conducted by the Crown Prosecutor, who said evidence would be- given that accused had offered the father of the g-rl £SO to hush up the matter, and he. understood this had been agreed to. However, the money was not paid, and in any ease the matter was already in the hands of the police, and it did not matter what the father did.. A crime of this kind was an offence against the community, and not ’against an individual family. The father of the girl . becanm ill while giving evidence and the ease was adjourned while a. doctor -was sent for. After hearing the medical report his Honour adjourned the case until this afternoon.
