EQUALITY OF STATUS
SOUTH AFRICAN BILL FULLY EXPRESSIVE FINALITY DESIRABLE (Times Cable.) (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, March 19. “The Times” says: “It is not easy to see the practical purpose to be served by the constitutional, legislation the South African Government is to introduce today. Forecasts have already caused irritation. However, Ministers are convinced that the agitation will die down when the text of the Bill is published. The Statute of Westminster conferred upon the Parliament of the South African Union every legal right enjoyed by the Government of Britain and swept away every relic of Imperial supremacy. Now the professed intention of the Union Government is merely to make the South African Act fully expressive of the equality of status the Union enjoys.”
“The Times’ ’ adds: “The Statute of Westminster, perhaps, may be justified on the ground that it will remove the sense of grievance still cherished by the Nationalist extremists, but the real problems of the day are too serious to allow attention to be diverted by perpetual wrangling over legal formulas. Let them settle the matter once and for all.”
