The baker, Mr Charles Taylor, who slept in one of the rooms attached to the washhouse, had risen to attend to the sponge and certain work preparatory to the day’s baking, and it is supposed that, in lighting his pipe before going into the bakehouse, somc- ! thing in his room became ignited. Help was called but the fire eoon spread to the bakehouse, and both buildings, with the contents, were completely destroyed. It being Monday morning, a considerable part of the linen from the hotel and a good deal of clothing had been shifted into the washhouse the day previous in readiness for the I weekly wash, and all this was de- j stroyod in the fire.
Mr C. Taylor had a severe personal loss. In addition to his clothing and other personal belongings, ho lost about £SO in cash which he had in his room in notes.
The oven in the bakehouse was cracked with the heat, but It is pro. liable that it can be restored. About .15 feet from the bakehouse was a-shod in which there was a motor truck owned by Mr Thode, and a tractor, owned by Mr A. Maria. This building was in some danger for a time.
The insurance on the bakehouse was £SO and on the washhouse and iwo rooms £SO. There was no insurance on the contents in either case.
