THE FIRST CLOVER
A SPLENDID CROP*. In the early thirties of last century, the Rev, Richard Davis, avlio was manager of the mission farm at Waimate, procured a quantity of white clover Y seed from England, and the Roa’. Jos- $ eph MatthoAvs, when he came to take, up his residence in Kaitaia begged a small quantity to take Avith him. Some time in 1534 he had about three acres of ground in front of the present vicarage, dug by the Maoris and soAvn AAqth the clover seed. The result Avas a splendid crop, and, as far as can be gathered, this Avas the first clover or grass crop grown in the Far North.
