UNEMPLOYMENT ACT
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. ' FAILURE TO REGISTER. TWO BROTHERS FINED. (Special to "Northern Advocate.*’) AUCKLAND, This Day.' Two brothers, Allen and Louis Batten, were charged at Onehunga -with failing to register under the Unemployment Act. A representative of the Unemployment Board said both men had persisted in the attitude that they could not register, as it was against their religious principles. The Magistrate: “Well, what have you to say?”
Defendants: “We have conscientious objections.” •The Magistrate: “Conscientious objections to paying taxes, have you?” ■—“Yes.”
The Magistrate: “So has everybody else, but they have to pay all the same, and so will you, or take it out. Fined £2 each.”
