THINGS MONEY CANNOT BUY
In a stimulating article in ‘ ‘ Chambers ’ Jonrnal, ’ ’ Mr Charles L. do Wolff points out some of the things that money cannot buy. He places these things in the following order: (a) True friendship, (b) culture, and (c) spiritual insight. He says that satellites and sycophants will gather round a rich man’s table with both eyes on the sideboard, and with feet alert, swiftly to depart should fortune fail their host. The ordinary man and woman, valued and beloved for what they have, are the only people who know the joys of abiding friendship. Turning to culture, lie points out that an uneducated rich man cannot buy the incalculable -pleasures of a welltrained mind, an informed intelligence, and the accuracy that comes from knowledge. All that is most worthy in a man he must work out for* himself. Finally he says, “Money cannot buy spiritual insight. On the contrary, it often chokes it. In most cases riches lower a man’s moral tone. He becomes materialistic, values everything in terms of pounds, shillings, and pence, scales his acquaintances by their possessions and tells you that ‘money makes the mare go.’ Maybe, but it is a [poor animal. These .are things that need emphasising in these days when there is an increased tendency for yoiing people to measure success in terms of £ s. d. *
