NORTHERN TENNIS
NEW COMPETITION. ON DAVIS CUP LINES. It is proposed to use part of the Grace Cup Funds for the purpose of purchasing a cup for competition among the tennis clubs of Mangonui, Whangaroa, Hokianga, and Bay of Islands Counties, The competition is to be run on the following lines: (1) Matches and teams are to be as in Davis Cup marches; each interclub match will consist of four singles matches and one doubles match and a team will consist of two men singles
players and one men doubles pair; the
latter not necessarily being the same * . two players as in the singles matches. The order of playing the matches will be: Two singles matches, the doubles and then the other two singles. Each singles player in each team will meet each singles player in the opposing team in turn. (2) The clubs will be ararnged in two zones as follows: (a) Northern, consisting of clubs in Mangonui County and that part of the Hokianga north, of the Hokianga river; (b) Southern, consisting of clubs in Whangaroa and Bay of Islands Counties and those parts of Hokianga south of the Hokianga river. (3) Opponents are to be drawn and notified immediately entries close.
(4) The team winning at three
out of five matches is the winner of ' that match and the loser is eliminated from the competition. The winning - team must personally communicate the result of the match to the secretary within 24 hours of the playing of the match, otherwise the winning . club will also be eliminated from the competition." (5) The home club will supply balls and a visiting team will arrange for their own meals in the absence of any arrangement to the contrary with the home club.
(6) The first round matches must be completed not later than February 11, the actual dat| of matches to be • arranged between the teams conconcerned and clubs will be. notified
the draw and date of completion of ‘ .subsequent rounds. If any match is not played by the dates fixed both clubs will be eliminated unless satisfactory proof is furnished the secre- . tary within 24 hours of the date fixed for the competition, that one club should be given the match by default, or vthe. secretary is satisfied, that, for other reasons, the clubs should be given a further opportunity of playing the match.
(7) Matches must be completed in
one day. In the event of a match being partially played, the winner shall be the club iyhich has won most matches/ and if equal, most sets or games.
(8} The winners of each zone will play: off in the final, which is to be played on the courts of the winners
of the northern and southern zones alternately each season, the final for the 1933-34 season to be played on the courts of the winner' of the southern zone. . (9) All other rules will, as far as possible, be in accordance with those f oit the Grace Cup competitions.
