PEDIGREE PIGS
EMBARGO ON IMPORTS. LIFTING OF BAN SUGGESTED. (Special tr. "Northern Advocate.") HAMILTON, This Day. At a meeting.of the Waikato Pig Eecording Club yesterday, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, advised that until a large majority of the pig breeders of New Zealand were in favour of lifting the embargo on the importation of pedigree pigs, the Government was. not prepared to take any action to relieve the present restrictions. Discussing the question later, Mr E, E. Hale, ,chairman of the club, said new blood was badly needed in the pedigree stock of New Zealand today. Tl'.e club was very anxious that breeders should maintain a high standard, and in this matter the club was supported by many of the breeders themselves. A great many breeders, continued Air Hale, were perfectly satisfied that, with the strict quarantine regulations in operation in England and New Zealand, sufficient safeguards were provided against the importation of serious swine diseases if the present ban were lifted. Other breeders were fearful of the risks, and maintained that there were sufficient pedigree pigs in the country to meet all needs for many years to come. As, usual, when those interested were in disagreement, the Government would take no action.
