Hone Hake
Hone Heke, a powerful Northern Chief, cut down the Flagstaff at Kororareka on the 10th January, 1845. A reward of £IOO was offered for his apprehension. Heke resented this and considered- it was likening him to a pig which could be bought. A second time the flagstaff at Kororareka was cut down by Heke. He lost possession of his stronghold at Kuapekapeka on Sunday, 11th January, 1846. Shortly after this he offered to make peace, and was granted a free pardon. Heke died in 1850, and was buried in a cave near the old mission station at Waimate North.
