PROFESSIONAL GOLF
“NEWS OF WORLD” TOURNEY
SEVERAL SURPRISES
VARDON AND PERRY BEATEN
(Received II a.m.) LONDON, September 19
There wore some surprises in the “News of the World” professional golf tournament, D. Rees, a 20-year-old Welshman, defeating Perry, and defeating Vardon. Results: — Padgham beat Smith, 5 and *4; Hodson beat Gadd at the 19th; W. Davies boat Frostikk, 6 and 4; E. Whitcombe beat Gandhi, one up; C. Whitcombe beat' Robson, 6 and 4; Cotton beat Nolan, 2 up; Kenyon beat Faulkner, 2 and 1; Alliss boat Walker, 4 and 5; Roes beat Perry at the 19th; R. Whitcombe beat Jewel, 3 and 2; Watts beat Barden, 2 up; Thompson beat Beck, 4 and 3.
Cotton is favoured in this tourney being played on the hilly Purley Downs course, in Surrey Hills, A big crowd followed his ding-dong fight with the Irishman, Nolan, who did so well in the early stages of the open championship. It was touch-and-go all the way, the players being all 'square at the thirteenth. Nolan lost by his approach shot overrunning the last two greens. The biggest surprise was the defeat of Perry, who reached the final in 1932, by the young Welshman Rees, who nearly threw the match away after being 2 up and 3 to play. Padgham, one of the strongest of the challengers, holed the first nine holes in 32 and gave a delightful display of smooth, controlled hitting. C. A. Whitcombe began brilliantly with 3,4, 3,2, 3, which is 6 under bogey. He took only 3,1 for the first nine holes, yet was only 2 up. Later he won four successive holes. .
