The president of the Chamber of . Manufacturers, Mr Gordon Dennis, stated today that if Japan was successful .in the proposed drive to flood Australia with toys, Australian workmen in the toy industry will have a very iean Christmas. The Minister of Customs, Mr P. W. Whote, stated in Canberra that the Cqmxhonwealth Government is keeping a close watch oh "the threatened flood b£; Japanese .toys, and if there is evidence to establish a prima facie case of dumping, or threatened dumping, it will;be dealt with quickly. An increase of 50 per cent in the value of/Australia's importations from Japan is shown by, a comparison of the figures for the financial year just endfid with those for 1931-32. The balance of trade between the Commonwealth and Japan, however, is still £5,000,000 in Australia's favour. Most'of; the goods imported from Japan are. competitive with the British importations.
