FAREWELL FUNCTION. POPULAR GOLF CLITB SECRETARY. A farewell social and dance was given in the Parochial Hall on Thursday night by the Whau Valley Golf Club, when a presentation was made to Sergeant-Major and Mrs W.. E. Caton. Sergeant-Major Caton was secretary to the Whau Valley Club, and is leaving on Monday en route for Indfa, where he is joining his brother. Sergeant-Major Caton was presented with a travelling rug, and Mrs Caton with a blouse case by members of the club.

Opportunity was also taken to make a presentation to Mr L. Ritchie, "who is leaving for Auckland on transfer on Monday.

About 70 couples were present at the function, and a number of appreciated items were given. Songs were rendered by • Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Blanshard, Miss J. i Mac Kay and Mr Murray, while several of the club members contributed a humorous item.

WEDDINGS.

SALMON—CARTER

A pretty wedding was solemnised at the residence of the bride's parents when Dorothy Edith, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Carter, Springfield, was married to Oliver Edwin Arnold, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. O. E. A. Salmon, of Mata. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked very pretty in a graceful frock of ivory satin beaute, with a wreath of orange blossom and veil of embroidered tulle.

She was attended' by her youngest sister, Miss Mabel Carter, as bridesmaid, who looked most attractive in a long dress of delifcate green crepe-de-chine.-

Both bride and bridesmaid carried lovely bouquets of white early spring flowers.

Mr. John Salnwm, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. Mrs. Carter, mother of the bride, wore a frock of . crushed strawberry flecked tweed and carried a bouquet, of violets. Mrs. "Salmon's frock was black, with hat and furs to tone; she also carried violets.

Mrs. Carter jnlayed the wedding .march on the orp^n. After a dainty breakfast the happy pair left by eajr for Whangarei, en route for the North, where the honey-

moon was spent.. The bride travelled in a perriwinkle blue coat and ajkirt of flecked tweed, with beret to tone.

WALKER—HILTON. A quiet and pretty wedding was solemnised at the Maungakaramea Presbyterian Church by the Rev. W. Elliott on th«e 25th Jury, when Anne, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hilton, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. David Hamilton Walker, elrfder son of Mr. anjd Mrs. F. G. H. Walker, of Maungjakaramea. Friends of the bride had ' decorated the chinch very charmingly with spring flowers. Mrs. Harvey presidfed at the organ.

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a smart frock of blue mousselaine crepe with cape trimmed with grey ermine, and felt hat to tone. She carried a sheaf of blue irises, hyacinths and pansies. Miss Mary Hilton was in attendance, wearing an attractive dress of grey crinkled crepe and grey felt cap. Roses, gerberas, anemones and cyclamen in delicate shades of pink composed her sheaf of flowers. Mr. Donald Walker was best man.

Following the ceremony the bride \s mother, attired in a black marocain dress and black chiffon velvet toque with eye veil, received the guests at her residence. SUCCESSFUL OCCASION. At the invitation of Mr and Mrs V. \ Wallbank, nearly two hundred friends gathered in the Portland Hall on Monday night last to celebrate the twentyfirst birthday of Miss Thelma Wallbank. Everything was done to ensure an enjoyable and delightful evening for the large number "of guests present. Dancing was commenced at S o'clock ami continued for an hour or more, when n very bountiful supper was handed round. Mr W. Nelson, as M. 0.. then spoke as to the purpose of. the gathering, and handed Miss Wallbank the key of the front door. Miss Wallbank suitably replied, thanking all for their good wishes and also for the many beautiful presents she had received.

The- handsome decorated cake was then cut, the guests singing "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow," followed by cheers.

A light refreshment of wine was pass eel round and dancing was continued to the early hours of the morning, when a most successful and enjoyable occasion was brought to a close. ODDPELLOWS' BALL. HAPPY HQURS IN TOWN HALL. The annual combined ball of the Loyal Whangarei, Hikurangi and Mnungatapere Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) was held on Thursday night in the Whangarei Town Hall. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and after the Grand March, led by Bro. H. R. McKenzie, N.G., and partner, a very pleasant time was enjoyed by all, dancing to the strains of excellent orchestral music. PRESENTATIONS

! The staff of the Whangarei Bargair. 'Stores, Ltd., gathered after work yo? terday to make a triple presentation. On the occasion of their approaching marriage, Mr James Connell and Mis.-; Melba Smith were presented with n silver tea-set, and Mr Trevor Mallendino, who is also contemplating n change in his state, was given a silver fish service. .Mr R. T. Tudehope, who presided, referred to the high popularity and esteem in which the young people were held. The recipients re plied suitably.

MANGAPAI SOCIAL CLUB'S GKAND DANCE. The popularity of the Social Club was h:lly evinced by the large attendance at the dance held on Thursday evening. This function proved to be one of tlie most successful held in Mnngapai for pome time. Visitors were present from Whangarei, Unakaka, Mara, Maungakaramea, etc., comfortably filling the hall. With a flr.'t class. Whangarei orchestra supplying the music and a strong committee in charge of all arrangements, not a dull moment was experienced during the evening. Messrs W. JASEWBLL AFTERNOON. In view of the notice of removal to Rotorua of Mr Leslie Brown of Powhiri Avenue, a number of Mrs Brown's friends met last week at the residence of Mrs Otway, Kamo Road, to bid her farewell. A pleasant afternoon was spent, several amusing recitations being given by Miss Gibson, with songs by Miss Gardner, of Purau, Lyttelton, Mesdames Fry, Holder and Shaw. A musical competition organised by Me?damos Shaw and Wright resulted in the prize going to Miss Airey, of Temuka; a sister of Mrs Brown at present on a visit to Whangarei. During the afternoon Mrs Otway presented Mrs Brown with a beautiful cut glass and silver vase, as well as a charming boucjuet of violets and pink heath which had been artistically arranged by Mrs Fry. To Mrs Brown's little daughter Maureen a lovely flower spray was next presented as well as a cup, saucer and plate and egg stand. Those present included Mesdames Bates, Barry, Fry, Gibson, Griffin, Holder, Maekie, McDonald, McKinley, Otway, Porter, Shneksmith, Shaw, Wrathall, Wright, and Misses Airey, Gardner and Gibson.
