"JEWEL THIEF.” AT THE, PLAZA. "Jewel Thief,” vrhich commenced a two-night season at the Plaza Theatre last night, has Vienna for a romantic background. William Powell is the jewel thief and ho needs no introduction to the theatre-going public as a polished scoundrel, but withal one that entertains and always finds a soft spot in the hearts of his victims. He has Kay Francis playing opposite him as a rather bored baroness with everything that she can desire. So that when she is, with her husband and some friends, "held up” in a big jewellery shop by this romantic thief she finds herself intrigued. The robber is charming and clears the shop with methodical speed. From this point the story takes a turn and the baroness finds that she cannot describe the thief to the inquiring police. He visits her mansion and is nearly caught, but a compact is made. Bhe will follow on the first train for Nice. This is only a bare outline of an entertaining story with plenty of amusement, excitement and charm. The supporting programme is excellent, including news; variety, and comedy. The programme will bo repeated tonight.
