ART UNION PROFITS
POLICY OF CABINET, EXPLAINED BY MINISTER. SPORTS BODIES BARRED. (Special to "Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The policy followed by the Committee of Cabinet in allocating art union proceeds was explained by the Hon. J, A. Young to a deputation to-day. He said the lists of applicants- for participation in art union profits contained nearly 1000 names. He had classified agricultural and pastoral societies as semi-official bodies performing efficient community service. At present many were finding it difficult to pay their way, and where their overdrafts had been guaranteed the banks wore now looking to the guaidiffers to' meet the interest. Many guarantors were in a worse position than the associations themselves. He looked with faA'onr ou helping such organisations, but had laid it down that no assistance Avould bo giA’Pii for building up reserves or creating uoav assols. A new phase had doA'elopod with the demands for assistance from social relief organisations. Such applications had streamed in, and in winlei such claims could not. he ignored. The sum of CIO, 00(1 had been devoted to relief from the last three art unions. The basis of such grants was the most recent return of unemployment ’registration.
Some applieslions for shares in the profits had no merit, including some forms of sport whore* patrons drove np in £IOOO ears. If such sports could not pot funds from adherents they wore not the sort of organisations to be helped from art union proceeds at the present time.
