PETROL FROM COAL
PLANT TO START OPERATIONS FIRM PROVIDES OWN CAPITAL. OUTPUT OF 100,000 TONS. CONSIDERABLE EMPLOYMENT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 9 a.m.) RUGBY, July 3. A plant for the production of oil from coal that will give direct employment to 2500 miners and other workers, as well as much indirect employment, will be operated by Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., at Billingham, on the Tees, Durham, Sir Harry McGowan, chairman of the company, states that new capital of about £2,500,000 will be furnished from the company’s own resources. The company has conducted research on hydrogenation of coal, tar and other materials for six years, and, in view of the undertaking given in the House of Commons yesterday by the Prime Minister, the directors., have authorised the erection of a large commercial plant. The initial output of 100,000. tons annually of first-grade petrol is aimed at by processing 400 tons of coal a day and using altogether about 1000 tons a day. The construction of the plant, it is estimated, will take about a year and a half and will call for much activity in the iron and steel and heavy industries. Seven thousand men will find direct employment during this period, and it ds expected that there will be indirect employment for a further 5000,
