VACANT TERRITORY

DEAN’S PEOPLING PROPOSALS. VIEWED ASKANCE BY JAPAN. MIS-STATEMENTS RESENTED. (Received 9 a.m.) TOKIO, July 19. The Dean of Canterbury’s proposal to give Japan a portion of North Australia is hardly commented upon in the Japanese press. The “Jiji Shimpo,” referring to Japan’s enormous population, says it does not take the Dean’s proposal seriously, but Australian newspaper articles referring to the conditions in Japanese industry are taken very seriously. Mis-statements about labour conditions in Japan are attributed to people with an axe to grind. Counter-informa-tion is being collected for transmission to Australia.
