ANZAC ROAD

DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. METALLING APPROVED. Described by one speaker as the only nninetalled thoroughfare in the borough, Anzac Road, and a portion of the road running along the top of Lookout Hill, are to receive attention.. This decision was reached by the Whangarei Borough Council last night, after hearing representations from Mr, 11. G, Poster.

(,'r. Tibbits explained that the roads in. this locality had been handed over to the borough when the County Conned vested Anzac Park in tlie Crown as a public domain.

The Distriet Trustee, writing in support of the work being taken in hand, said that the estate of Hannah North held a considerable area of land in the locality which was hard to dispose of, owing to difficulties of access in the winter months. The estate had actually ua : d for the metalling of the roads in rates. When Anzac Park was handed over as a public park in consideration of the County Council taking over the roads, the intention was that the roads should be properly metalled when .circumstances warranted.

Mr. Poster said that during the winter he was completely cut off, and, unless something were done, he would have to contemplate giving up his property. There were two alternative reading schemes —ill chains from the end of the metal at Morningside Road to his home, and 41 chains,as a continuation of Anzac Road. Residents of Anzac Road, including himself, were prepared to contribute in all £26, provided the longer route was metalled. The Mayor favoured doing Anzao Road, as the other section of road would not touch borough ratepayers. The county was prepared to contribute £l2, and he moved that, provided the contribution as promised from the ratepayers was received, the road bo covered 10 feet wide in brown metal with a surface of blue chips. This was seconded by Cr. Donaldson. Cr. dounneaux; “I have never believed in backblock conditions close to town or anywhere. People who cannot, afford dear sections will settle further out il decent conditions are provided. A lot of roads are kept back because engineers advocate pretentions schemes, while tlie people would be quite satisfied with something on account.”

Ors. FinC'li mid Holmes thought that North's estate, wliit*ti would benefit so much, should contribute to the cost of making tho road, but thoii- nmondnieut lo tlinl. effect was defeated.

A further amendment proposed, by Cr. Fiutdi, that the road be surfaced. 9 feet wide with blue metal and covered with brown metal, was also rejected by six votes to three, and the* motion was carried.

The work will commence immediately the contributions are received.
