AIR JONES IN REPLY.
In order that he might have an opportunity of replying to the above before election day, we .showed the letter to the Mayor, who writes as follows: • .Sir, —Only one thing in Mr Brownes letter seems to require an answer. Mr Brown claims that -within a week of his deputation to the council, rates for local relief -workers -were substantially increased, inferring that' the increase was' his doing. As a matter of fact, Mr Brown’s activities had nothing to j do with the matter. The increase was the result of prolonged negotiations between the Local Committee and the Unemployment Board, and particularly the personal efforts of the Mayor, who talked by ’phone to Mr Jessep, the Deputy-Chairman of the Board, at Wellington. Anyone having had anything to do with the Unemployment Board will realise the absurdity of stating that the increase one week after -Mr Brown’s agitation was the effect of that, agitation. With regard to workers’ wages, the only reason the borough workmen’s wages were not reduced was the fact that they were protected by an award. In conclusion, 1 wish (o thank yen for your courtesy In allowing me to reply to this letter. .1 am, etc., W. .TONES,
