(Special to “Northern Advocate.”' * , ' DARGAVELLE, This Day. ’ With all the 90 remits on the order * paper disposed of, the* provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union concluded last evening. Most of the remits were agreed to, but some were referred to the executive for further consideration, or to be brought up again later. * the subjects of the remits ; discussed were currency reform, derat- ' ing. of farm lands, overlapping of cream carting, quotas, interest and rent, exchange, telephone rentals, liens on ,cream cheques, hospital maintenance, and political - action. ' The conference considered in committee the question of passive resistance'to the payment of rates. * Urging that the executive arrange ■for'“a ticket for county council elections and advise farmers to support only the candidates who pledged them selves to support the ticket, the derating of farm lands for. reading purposes to be the first reform, was lost. An amendment that the executive or-
ganise meetings of ratepayers throughout the province, and that the principle of derating be made one of the chief aims of the Union, was carried. In regard to the' overlapping of cream factories, and carting, a . remit was carried to the effect that, to avoid economic waste, the industry should be reorganised compulsorily by the Government, proprietary concerns to be bought 'out, unnecessary co-oper-ative concerns to be .absorbed by other co-operative organisations, and redundant factories closed. There was a long debate on the quota proposals, at the end of whhh the following motion was carried: — “That this Union is alarmed at the suggestion of quota restrictions on our export of primary produce, and we urge the Government to take steps to reduce fortlnvith duties on British goods in order to regain the good Avill of the British public."
