EXPORTS INCREASE

NFAV ZEALAND TEADE,

. THE MARCH RETURNS. IMPORTS .SLIGHTLY UP. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) WELLINGTON, Tins Hay. Exports from New Zealand during March;; according to preliminary returns of the month’s overseas trade issued by the Customs Department in Wellington yesterday, showed a valuation of £5,306,273, which is a large increase on the £3,(382,468 at which exports during March, 1032, were valued. There is a slight increase in imports ou the exceptionally low figure In March last year, this year’s total being £1,888,800, against .-£1,872,030. The March movement is reflected in,. !thc figures for the first quarter of '1933. Exports have risen from £11,400,001 to £13,343,082. This is not so marked, however, because last year the low value in March followed high figures for January and February. There has been greater uniformity in the figures for the three months this year. As far as imports are concerned, the March increase has not compensated for decreases earlier in the year, and the total for the three months is £5,574,637, against £5,840,283 in 1032. The apparent favourable balance for the quarter lias shown a substantial rise of more than £2,000,000 from £5,050',31S to £7,760,345.

For tlie twelve months ended March 31, the export returns show an inereasc of £4,313,0f)!), compared with last, year, and a reduetion of only £717,02,°. below the .1030-31 total. These figures, howoyor, arc still more than £10,000,000 less than those for 1029-°O. Imports are lower by less than £500,000, compared with last year’s total, hut a decrease of £15,000,000 from the‘level reached in 19.°. 1 -92 has been shown. The nominal favourable balance is £10,000,000, compared with £11,000,000 last year, and only £1,227,000 the year before. Exchange movements have influenced these figures, but not. sufficiently to destroy the striking character of the comparison.
