BOROUGH WORKERS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Now that Christmas Is upon us once more, I suppose the Whangarei Borough Council is intending to give its staff a fortnight's holiday on “full pay" as usual. This, I consider, is a scandal, seeing the borough labourers were done out of their holiday pay some two years ago. One of the councillors told the council that if they took the holiday pay away from the labourers it would save the borough £ISOO a year. I suppose he thought ho might as well tell a big one while he was about it, but he did not say how much it would save the ratepayers if the staff was treated in the same way. T presume it would be more, as their salaries are so much more. There is another thing I would' like to say before the ratepayers, and that is that whereas the County Council, the Harbour Board and the Hospital Board, as well as all other public bodies, made two cuts in their wages and salaries, the Whangarei Borough Council has only made one cut. Of course self interest might make, the council forget this matter, but we are not all so forgetful, for we have to do a lot. of saving up of the shillings to pay the rates to keep this sort of thing going. I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
