WEDGED IN DOORWAY
MOTOR. LORRY’S RAMPAGE
STRUCTURAL HAVOC
HOUSEHOLDER GETS A SHOCK
(.Special to “Northern Advocate.")
AUCKLAND, Saturday,
To hear a crash at the front of the house while she was working at the buck, and to find, on inspection, that the rear of a heavy lorry was wedged securely in the front door, was the experience of -Mrs W. Hunter, of 28, (Spring Street, this morning.
A lorry, one of the Vacuum. Oil Company's, was going up .Spring Street, and, when climbing the steep portion just outside the house where Mrs Harris lives, it suddenly ran back and crashed into the front of the dwelling. One corner of the front room was carried completely away, and the main upright beam was snapped like a match. The woodwork was torn and twisted, and some of the boarding was splintered. The wallpaper was all that remained to prevent people iix the street outside from looking right into the room if they had eo wished. One side of the front door is no longer there, and the door leading into the room from the passage is all awry. A chair in the room was broken and one of the pieces thrown into the rear of the house. Pictures were thrown from the walls, - though the glass in the front door was not broken, and only one pane of ghn-is in the room’s windows.
The house is slightly below the level of the road, and one of the rear wheels of the vehicle ran over the verandah, splintering the flooring and breaking the railing into flrewood lengths. The cargo of the lorry was drums of turpentine, so Mrs Harris said, and one of them came to rest neatly just outside the front door. ‘‘ I got a terrible shock, ” said Mrs Harris, “when 1 heard the crash. The whole house shook. .1 thought it must be the lorry, because I heard it groaning as it passed. I have seen too many try to take the hill and then have to back down and take some other road, less steep.
