A iiro in No. 1 hold of the steamer Taronga, 6100 tons, which is loading wool at I’yrmoiit, yesterday afternoon, required the efforts of 320 firemen until the evening before it was controlled.
The outbreak occurred among copra which was loaded at Rabanl. The copra burned fiercely.
The brigades and two fire-floats poured largo quantities of water into the hold and the steamer developed such a list that the fire-floats had to begin pumping water out of one side, while the fire-fighters continued on the other.
The damage amounted to £SOOO. The Taronga is not structurally damaged, and it is expected that, she will resume her voyage on Tuesday.
