•Carnival spirit reigned at Ilawcra on Saturday in continuation of the celebrations of borough jnbiloc. Several thousands of people thronged the streets for open-air concerts and fancy dress dancing, which continued from 0.00 in tlie evening till midnight.

The special event of the occasion was the switching on of the jubilee beacon, installed on the Neon light principle, to commemorate the jubilee of February last. The beacon is formed by a series of lights circling over the top of the water tower, 106 feet above the ground level, and said to be New Zealand’s highest shy sign. The beacon will operate nightly from sunset to 2 a.m., and will be visible over a wide area. It has been charted by the Marine Department.
