The touring English cricketers commenced their first match against Tasmania at Launceston today in fine weather and on a true and fast wicket. Wyatt won the toss and opened the innings with Sutcliffe. The Yorkshireman batted brightly for a score of 101, which he made in 68 minutes. He hit two sixes and six fours. Pataudi played attractive cricket for 109 runs, which he scored in 139 minutes. He hit eight fours. A total of 300 was reached in 223 minutes. Less than half an hour later 50 had been added. The score had reached 395 for 3 wickets when stumps w’ere drawn. Details of the score are:—

The Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia was commenced today. The -wicket was good.

South Australia in the first innings scored 213 (Whittington 73, Grimmett 36,Richardson 28). O’Reilly took 4 wickets for 47, Stewart 3 for 35, and Howell, 3 for 61. New South Wales scored 76 runs for 0 wickets for stumps w T oro drawn. A Melbourne message states that there -was no play ,in the Sheffield Shield cricket match, Victoria v. Queensland, owing to rain.
