FISH FOOD

WHANGAREI STREAMS

NOTED AUTHORITY’S VISIT:

Professor Purcell, a- Leeds University man, of Christchurch, recognised as the greatest Now Zealand authority on. fish food and the growth of fish generally, Is visiting Whangarei. Yesterday, accompanied by the president of the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society, Mr J. W, Parkin, and the secretary, Mr J. F. S. Briggs, he inspected the Hatca River from Mair Pool upwards, and also the Whan Valley stream. It was found that there was plenty of food below the Whangarei Palls, but above the falls, except for a few freshwater snails, there was practically nothing upon which the tish could live.

This accounts for the non-success of the society in that part of the river; which for thirty years has been endeavouring to produce a good head of trout there. It is probable that the deficiency of food above the falls is caused by the presence of mineral springs, the carbon dioxide from which is dissapiated when the water leaps over the falls.

Today Profi*«or Purcell is visiting the Kara and Whakapara streams. He will spend the week-end at Kawakawa, returning to deliver a public address in Whangarei, probably on Tuesday night.
