WHAU VALLEY
NEW HEADMASTER. SUGGESTED UNIFORM. Marching into position to the music, of an amplified gramophone and a drum, the scholars of tho Whau Valley Primary School formed up for their prize-giving ceremony yesterday afternoon. In the absence of the chairman, Mr M. W. Porter, who was in the Far North, Mr J. Shucksmith presided. He referred to tho loss sustained during the year in the transfer of Mr ft. J. Bishop, an outstanding headmaster, but said as the people came to know the successor, Mr R. Noel Thomson, they would realise that tho loss might be completely counteracted, Mr Shucksmith especially thanked Mrs Allen and Messrs Clarke, Solomon and Porter for the presentation of special prizes. In a brief speech the headmaster reviewed tho continued advancement of the school, the roll of which was now ICS. He offered the suggestion that girls should "wear a tunic costume, as most suitable for their games and for their future life in the High School. Mr Thompson especially 'referred to the fine workers in the completing Standard IY. He hoped they would continue rendering such lino service and that they would always meet him with a straight" eye and a smile of recognition. From a Christmas tree every child received a gift. Afternoon tea was served in the buildings, where interesting exhibitions of school work wero j on view. j Afterwards the Mayor addressed j the children briefly. The Awards. The prizes were presented by Mr J. Shucksmith as follows: — Good Attendance. —Grace McWilliam, Jessie Storey, Desmond Wallbank, Gavin Davidson, Claud Philpott, Home Garden.—" Warren Morpeth and William McKinnon (first prize bracket) Joan Cochrane, Jack Maitland, lan Fraser, Jean Sothern, Roy Blake (special prize). Character and Improvement. —Stanley Hill. Head Boy.—" Warren Morpeth. Head Girl. —Maisie McLachlan. Tennis. —Claud Philpott (cup); most improved player, Joseph Smith (Mr Porter’s prize). Mr E. L. Whimp, on behalf of tho president of the Whaugarei Cricket Association, presented the shield won by Whau Valley, champions of the junior primary competition.
