A storekeeper, Stanley George Humphrey, was convicted in the Magistrate's Court at Raivene yesterday on a charge of being in a. state of intoxication while in charge, of a motor car near Horeke. He was fined £lO, and liis license to drive was cancelled for twelve months. The Tauranga Land Settlement. League has decided to make representations to the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, concerning the serious menace to settled holdings through the unchecked growth of ragwort and other noxious weeds on Crown, native and ‘‘absentee” owned lands. The question of church union was discussed by the Christchurch Presbytery yesterday, when a. resolution was carried unanimously opposing union at present. The resolution held: ‘‘That the time is not ripe for an incorporating union between the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, but realises that there is a call for closer co-operation. A conference Is suggested to that end.” Charles William Bennett, the prisoner who escaped from Hantu prison camp, Tokaami, in February last, was arrested by Constables D. Muir and T. Collins eight miles inland from Te Haiti at noon yesterday. Bennett had just received food at a roadman’s camp under the name of Brown and was occupying a hut in the vicinity. M hen he was arrested he submitted quietly and was brought to Te Ivuiti and lodged in the local gaol.

“There has boon a. lot of criticism of tlie substitution of an intermediate examination for second-year scholars in place of the Public Service examination,’'’ said the High School principal, Hr A. A pleasant - little ceremony was performed at the Hora .Hora School .on Tuesday, the occasion being the annual prize-giving. The Solomon -Prizej for the best all-round boy in the school, was annexed by Herbert James, to whom the donor presented the trophy. The School Committee’s prize for the Best all-round girl was presented by Mr G. Betholl, chairman of the committee, to Phyllis Cook, the successful pupil. Both recipients suitably replied.

A tourist from Canterbury, Miss Eckford, met with a serious accident at Parenga on the road from Spirits’ Bay on Tuesday, lu getting out of her car, the engine of which was left in gear, she slipped and fell, suffering a compound fracture of the left leg near the ankle. The car subsequently moved off and ran round in a circle, but eventually stopped with the engine still running. After receiving lirst aid treatment, .Miss Eckford was taken to the Kaitaia Hospital. “Lady Godloy Cup for junior shooting—Cadet A. S. Waddell,” announced the master reading the prize list at the High School breaking-up ceremony last night. “There was a ripple of delight as a line soldierly looking youth of three feet nothing made his way from the back of the hall to receive his prize. “They’re making them young these days,” ouc old marksmen was heard to remark to his companion. if Cadet Waddell continues .the way he lias begun ho will have his eyes on Bisley and the King’s Prize before long. • The evidence in what is believed to bo the longest case over heard by a magistrate in Taranaki, a claim for £123 damages for alleged slander, was concluded at Inglewood on Tuesday, and there now remains legal argument, for -which purpose the case was adjourned until Friday at New Plymouth. The claim was by Alfred Corkill, exchairman of* the Inglewood County Council, against Robert Stuart, the present chairman. Of the amount, claimed £25 was set down as compensation for the loss of the chairmanship at the last county election.

Mr. W. W. Toy, of Lyttelton, when visiting the Chatham Islands was offered COO acres of land for a bottle of beer on condition that he paid the rates outstanding, amounting to £5 10/-. The present owner, who is wellknown in Lyttelton, told Mr. Toy that the land had been in the possession of his family since he was a boy and, so far as he knew, no one had ever set foot on it. There is swampland all round the area and it is impossible to get to it, even on horseback. As the Tees voyaged round the coast Mr. Toy saw the land, on which there were numerous wild sheep, but he came to the conclusion that probably he had better not become a landowner for the present, at the price demanded for the estate, “for there must be better bargains offering.”
