WHANGAROA COUNTY

\ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Hospital Ball, The annual dance in aid of hospital ■funds was held in Pye’a Hall on Thursday night last, October 20, Music, was supplied to a largo crowd of dancers by Gladwin’s orchestra, while extras were given by Miss Jecentho and Messrs D. Hfighes, R. Whitehead and H, Brainley. Mr Skoglund carried out the duties of M.G. in his usual sprightly manner. During the evening Dr Edginton recited a selection from “The Sentimental Bloke,” which was received with prolonged applause. A delightful supper served by the ladies added not a little to the enjoyment of the evening. Hospital funds will benefit by this pleasant little function to the extent; of about £lO. Tennis Notes. Saturday last, as is not unusual in this locality, the day scheduled for the official opening of the Jvaeo tennis courts, dawned in a- most unpromising manner. So characteristic, in fact, was the 'weather that in the morning a postponement was seriously considered. It was, however, found possible to adhere to the programme arranged, aifd the afternoon was marred only by a few light showers and a moderate to strong gale of wind from the northwest. Mrs Kenney Senr. drove the first ball over tiie net, and Mr Fryer declared the . courts officially opened for the season. There wore present not a few members of neighbouring clubs, and some, good tenuis was seen. A sumptuous afternoon tea- was served to over oO people by the lady members of the club.

On Labour Day there was a fair attendance at the courts and the day would have been an enjoyable one had it not been for what might bo euphemistically termed the boisterous wind.
