RAILWAYS 'CONCERNED. (Per Press Association.— CoDyrlght.j WELLINGTON, This Day. A protest against several activities of the Railways Department which interfere with private enterprise is to he made to the Prime Minister, the Rfc. Hon. G. W. Forbes, by a deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce, according to a decision made by the executive yesterday. The competition of railway workshops with private engineers, competition with- private carrying firms feeding railways, and the action of the department in taking over the Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin station bookstalls, instead of submitting them Cor public tender for lease by private booksellers, wore discussed. It was stated that the railway workshops were producing in excess of requirements and were supplying Government departments, with the result that private enterprise was now being made to' pay for past mistakes in over-equipping workshops.
