rigid policy of retrenchment. Sir Herbert Austin, the motor ear magnate, was one of the speakers at the Advertising Convention at Liverpool recently. Economic conditions, he said, dictated a rigid policy of retrenchment in manufacturing and distributing expenditure, while on tin other hand the manufacturer could not afford in such times to economise on advertising and other sales aids. In deed, if anything, he had to increase his" outlay in those directions. In the fabric of advertising the chief strain wa* undoubtedly the Press. They musi -all feel proud of the general higl standard of British newspapers, no oily for the quality of their printing but for their lay-out and general new value, coupled with a dignity that wa missing in most other news-sheets o the world.
