TOSS OF A PENNY

DECIDING LEGAL COSTS. SUGGESTION BY JUDGE. Many disputes Bare Been settled by a toss of a coin, but it is doubtful if the method has often been resorted to for the settlement of differences of opinion as to solicitors’coats. In the Quarter Sessions Appeal Court in Sydney lately Mr Lionel Dare applied for £d d/ costs in a certain matter, but Mr .1. Evan endeavoured to dissuade Judge Ed wards from awarding more than £M 3/. His Honour listened patiently for some time and at length advised the solicitors to settle the amount among themselves. “Get outside and toss for it,” his Honour suggested. Both solicitors then went outside the court. A third party obligingly spun the penny in the air. “Heads!” called Mr Dare. The coin came down upon the asphalt with a sharp ring. The solicitors bent over it. The King’s head was uppermost. Air Dare ' had won.
