FINE SPELL BROKEN
RAIN LAST NIGHT.: BENEFIT TO FARMERS. Signs that the long spell of dry weather, which has been .experienced- in Whangarei and the North, was coming to an end, were not wanting early this Aveek, but rain did not come until last eA'-ening, when a- steady north-east-erly set in. The rain at first was. very light, but increased during the-night, and .85in ' had been recorded at ft a.m. today. Although spring growth has been retarded to a certain extent by the dryperiod, the pasture’s generally were looking remarkably fine, but that was not to say that rain was not needed. Last night’s fall will be of great bene-, fit to the farmers.
WELCOME PALL. / DAIRYMEN PLEASED. (Special to “Northern Advocate/') DARGAVILLE, This Day. Warm rain commenced to fall late yesterday afternoon, and continued all night and is still falling. Despite the fact that cream returns show an increase of approximately 3(T per’ cent. ’ this season, the rain was very welcome, as the months of August and September have been the driest' for a decade, and paddocks arc drying up * too quickly for tins’ period of the year, when much rain is required if Ihe pastures are to" preserved during the summer months. With butterfat up to 1/ a lb. an increased payout is anticipated for paid earlier in the month. Dairy farmers all over the district arc in a much better frame of mind than for 12 months.
