WHANGAROA COUNTY

FACTORY MATTERS. The extraordinary-general meeting of suppliers to discuss the appointment of a mechanic at the factory was held in Pye’s Hall on Tuesday morning, September 6. Mr W. H. Lane presided over a gathering of nearly 150 suppliers. . - It was moved by Air Martin that no mechanic be employed at the factory. Mr Conolly seconded the motion, whicn was carried by a considerable majority. Although the motion was against the directors wlien their supporters moved that a postal ballot be taken, the chairman dissuaded them, pointing out that no good was likely to come of such a step. During the discussion Mr Bates said that he very much doubted whether 50 per cent, of those present fully understood the subject upon which they had just voted, or realised the issues at stake.The I various speakers supporting the motion stressed the fact that the carrying of the motion was not to be taken as a vote of no confidence in the chairman or directors.

Meeting of Directors. The ordinary monthly meeting of directors of., the Whangaroa Co-op. Dairy Co. was held at Kaeo on Saturday last, September .10. Butter manufactured for August was 3 tons 17 ewt above August of lastyear. The pay-out was fixed at lOd first-grade. After some discussion the directors decided to suspend the installation of the ice-making plant until next year. The new 2000-gallon cream vat is due to arrive within the fortnight, and arrangements will be made tc have it received and fitted. The chairman was instructed to represent the company at the conference of the north ward,' convened by the Dairy Control Board, to be held at WhangiU rei on September 20th. The machinery which had already been bought for the proposed garage was disposed of t*j Whitehead Bros. *

County Council. The resolution passed at the previous meeting making a special order of the renewal of the antecedent liability loan was confirmed, and a Gazette notice and sundry letters dealing with the same were read. A letter was received from the Mangonui County Council concerning the establishment of any independent supplies of electricity in the North. It was suggested that, the matter be brought up at the conference likely to be called for the discussion of unemployment problems. A letter was read from the Regis-trar-General's office appointing, at the request of the Council, the Postmaster at Kaeo registrar of marriages.

The Minister of Public Works wrote te advise the council that a petitiort had been received from the settlers on the Omaunu Block: road praying for metal: He would look into the matter and advise later. Discussing this mar-, ter, the chairman said that this roaa was placed first in his recent talk with the district engineer concerning county estimates. The balance sheet was returned from, the Audit Department without adverse comment, and was adopted. Accounts amounting to £1,023 12/4 were passed for payment. ■ Or, Leslie, who was about to visit Whangarei, was authorised to urge the district engineer to complete the approaches to the Kahoe Bridge, the old bridge being quite unsafe for any traffic. Arising out of the foreman’s report: He was instructed to take immediate steps for the replacement of the wooaoa bridge at the Pupuke school by a concrete culvert; to procure the extra decking required for the bridge of* Foley’s access road at Waihapa; to commence the widening of Weber’s stop-bank, the raising of the old Man gonui road and Pahi’s road to divert the traffic while . Weber’s bridge is being rebuilt next winter. The couni./ is to do the formation, while the P.W.D. will metal this section of road. The foreman was instructed to have tin* Totara North Cemetery cleared by unemployed labour, and to define and number the lots. The council decided to revert to the monthly meeting. With regard to the unsatisfactory position of the foreman, it was pointe.l out by the chairman that the title was not in accord with the duties performed. Immediately subsequent on the council meeting, the unemployment committee met to discuss matters relating to unemployment in the county. Harbour Board. The balance sheet as received from the Audit Department was adopted. It was decided that in future the cost of placing dangerous cargo in the benzine store should be borne by the board and not collected from the consignee, as in the past. The secretary was instructed to have the wharf dues accounts brought up to date before the end of this month, and to see that in future all dues are paid in easli before the goods are removed. The ap-‘ pointment of a collector of dues was made conditionally, subject to confir. mation in three months. .

W.D.P.U. The ordinary monthly meeting of the JCaeo branch was held in the library on Thursday afternoon last, September 8. The roll call was answered by the members giving their favourite pudding. The Women's Exchange was started and it is hoped that one will be held every month. In the presence of 40 or ;10 members the president, Mrs W. 11. Lane, presented to Mrs Christie who is leaving the district, a very handsome handbag. Mrs Christie, who was one of the first vice-presidents, will be missed not only in the W.D.F.U., of which she was a keen member, but in the district generally. Hostesses wove Mesdames Silk, Dale and McEeown.
