OBITUARY
XORTHF.RX WAIROA SPORTSMAN.
Tlie death took place at the homestead, Hoanga, on Sunday, somewhat suddenly, of Mr Alexander Banks; one of the most popular and best-known settlors in the Northern Wairoa. The late Mi; Banks, popularly known as “Sandy, ’’ was born on the ship Wailangi while his parents were on route from Scotland to Now Zealand, 5G years ago, The family settled ,pn the West Coast of the South Island, where, when lie grew to man’s estate, the late Mr A. Banks engaged in coal, mining. Twenty-two years ago he took up a section of land when Graham’s Fern estate at Hoanga.was cut up, and by dint of much hard work had, at the time of his death, brought it in from the rough to one of the best and most improved farms in that fine little settlement, where every farm is highly cultivated. In his younger days Mr Banks was a keen athlete and took part in all forms of manly outdoor sport, being particularly interested in football, cricket and boxing, following these three sports_ after he retired from active interest in them right up till the time of his death. Kind-hearted to a degree, Mr Banks was always ready and willing to assist any cause that needed assistance and no genuine appeal made to him was ever turned aside. Hoangh owes much of its progress to the wayin which he worked to further its .interests, his time, energy and money being behind any movement which had for its object the advancement of the settlement. . A Bruid of many years’ standing, he was -a Part Arch of the order. , In Masonic -he was l an ardent member of St. George Lodge, 1801 E.C. As was only fitting to a man so fond of all classes of sport, he was a member of the Bargaville Racing Club and Northern Wairoa Boxing Association, also a great supporter local football and cricket. He was a foundation member of the Northern Wairoa Scottish Society, and at the time of his death held ‘the office of Chieftain. Few men in the district were more respected than the date “Sandy” Banks.
He is survived by his widow, one son, George (the well-known footballer, cricketer and boxer), and two daughters, the Misses Euby and Margaret Danks, all of whom reside at Hoanga, The interment took place at Mt. Wesley Cemetery yesterday.

Sullivan, aged 63 years, who. was elected treasurer -of the Dominion Bowling Council in 1930." Great regret was expressed when it became known that the Hon. Eatu Epeli Gavidi Ganilau, a member of the Legislative Council, had died, after ,a Short illness, from influenza. He Was born in 1592, and was a member of one of the highest families in th'e Fiji group. Educated' at Wanganui College, New Zealand, he entered the colonial Service iji the Native Department iii 1912. In 1920 he was appointed acting Roko Tui Ea. The appointment was confirmed in 1923, and in 1925,• on the death of the then Eoko. Tui Cakaudrovo, he was appointed to that position, which is that of the native head of a province. Last year he was appointed by his Excellency to the Legislative Council. He was a favourite with all who knew him, and was greatly respected by both European and Fijians alike. His funeral was largely attended.
