THE ARAPUNI TROUBLE

FILLING THE LAKE, RAPID PROGRESS. (Special to "Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. The raising of the level of the Arapuni lake has proceeded more rapidly than was anticipated, owing to the fall of rain up-country, and it is now expected by the engineer in charge, Mr. T. Rabone, that the headrace water will bo flowing over the spillway at 7 o’clock to-night. At 2 p.m. to-day the level in the head-race was within nine inches of normal.

The present submerged cofferdam will not be removed in the meantime. It will remain in position until the engineers are ready to launch the island structure, a work which is not one of particular urgency. This is a highlevel dam, and will be operated and used while the lake is at its normal level. It will be necessary, of course, slightly to lower the water in the head-race when the time comes for the remoVal of the cofferdam.
