UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

BOXING- TOURNAMENT, The low state of the funds of the local"-Unemployment Relief Committee has been the eanao of inueh thought on the part'of that committee as to the manner by which the funds could, he built up. It. was decided to approach sporting bodies for their assistance and the 'Whangarei. Boxing Association has advised its willingness to stage a tournament. It may be stated that this association has, since its inception, given considerable help to local benefits, and it is pleasing to note that it is again to the fore. The association has advised that Messrs H. Scally and the secretary have been appointed a sub-committee to meet the Relief Committee. The secretary of the Boxing Association, Mr E. Trowern, states that it has been decided to stage the tournament on the 7th September next, and to that end nominations from amateurs willing to compete are called for. Already quite a number of nominations have been received, and it is confidently expected that a programme will bo submitted that will be. worthy of the cause for which the entertainment is to be staged. Three special bouts of an outstanding interest will be contested. These arc between amateurs who have been selected as Possibles and Probables for inclusion in the team to represent North Anchland at. the New Zealand Championships to be held at New Plymouth next, month. The amateurs concerned are already in serious training, and it can be readily assumed that they will make every effort to win. These bouts alone will be well worth seeing, but in addition, several return bouts are expected to be staged. »S. Hunter, of Dargaville, has stated his desire again to meet If. Preston, of Whangarei. A. Hodgson is another who is convinced ho can reverse the decision obtained ever him by T. Campbell, and if these two competitors stage the same display ns they did on the last occasion, it will be a. contest worth going a long way to see.

The worthiness of the cause, in addition to a splendid programme, should indeed see a packed house. The house staff and tournairent officials will be the same as acted at the last tournameht.
