WHANGAREI DAIRY COMPANY.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —By the enclosed pamphlet, which all suppliers of the Whangarei Dairy Company received with their annual balance-sheet, you will sec that Mr AY. 11. Chetham will move at the annual meeting, on 19th August: “That this meeting of suppliers of the AVhangarei Dairy Co., Ltd., requests the board of directors to call a general meeting of suppliers each year, such meeting to be held at least six weeks before the date of the annual general meeting, but not earlier than Ist May. The objects of this meeting to be—(l) The general discussion of all subjects that may promote the spirit of co-operation within the organisation. (2) The discussion of any proposed nominations for the position of director. It is further suggested that this meeting bo hold in AVhangarei between the hours of 10.30 and 3 p.m., and that a light luncheon be provided by the company. Now, Mr Editor, through the medium of your valuable paper, I, as a supplier to the above factory for just on,-twenty years, would like to tell Mr Chetham that his motion is quite uncalled for, and is harassing to the directorate and staff, who in these abnormal times are cutting down all unnecessary work and expense in the way of any extra meetings, clerical work, etc. AAHiat would be the benefit of this preliminary meeting, in any case, a few weeks before the annual one, as at that time, so close up, any supplier, by the prices he has received during the season, also by market reports, can pretty well judge what he is likely to receive in full. AA r c enjoy a splendid board of directors —all dairymen—and staff, so 1 think we can safely leave all business matters to them as in the past. It’s like counting the change twice — no faith. Regarding promoting a spirit of co-operation within the • organisation, have wo not always on-
joyed this? The amicable annual meetings in the past prove this, so that clause can bo cut out. Also, Why a discussion on the merits of any proposed nomination for a, position on the directorate? His votes received on poll-ing-day are all that is required. Or does Mr Chatham mean that a nominee has to speak from the public platform to prove his worth? Tf so, ho Is wrong. Only the other day, on reading in your paper the account of, I think it was the Kaitaia annual meeting, the chairman made the remark that he found in his experience it was not by any means the most fluent speaker who made the best director; in fact, quite the reverse. Myself, I have never known hot air and brains to harmonise: they melt. I hardly think Mr Chetham is serious, so I trust all other suppliers will treat the whole motion as quite unnecessary, and again give the board a fair spin, such as they have had in the past.—l am, etc., QtJtTE SATISFIED.
