OHAEAWAI NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A La Mode, A mock vice-regal reception party, inaugurated by the combined Waimate and Ohaeawai Bible classes, in aid of the city orphanages, was held in the latter’s hall last Wednesday, the 3rd inst. The Rev. Y. Thomas (Ohaeawai) presided as Governor-General, and Miss Fuller (Waimate) as Countess of Auckland. Formal invitations were despatched far and wiTle and met with good response.

The social commenced at 7.30 p.m. with games and competitions, lasting till !• p.m., after which his excellency and tlio official party, consisting of the archbishop, the chief justice, prime minister and members of the cabinet arrived. Then ensued the presentation of the debutantes and investiture, which proceeding was carried out in a trnlv orthodox fashion.

The debutantes, a dozen in all, made a pretty setting in their white dresses, long trains and posies. Knighthoods and various orders such as 0.8. E., 0.M.G., etc., were conferred so abundantly that one person of rank remarked that it could not bo such an awesome business after all to be “dubbed” knight.

As there was no charge for admission, a collection took place immediately after the grand march, which was led by their excellencies. Musical and elocutionary items filled in the time till 10.1-1 when it Avas thought expedient to set out a specially prepared supper to which was done fn'l justice. If congratulations were not offered the ladies who prepared the “spread,” the manner in which it. was relished spoke volumes, and words would have been superfluous. However, more games followed, until approximately n..‘'!D p.m., when all joined hands and sang “Anld Lang Rvne.’ •’

Rugby Football, At Oknib.au last 'Saturday, tbc juniors played Kaikohe, and won by three points after an exceptionally hard game. The teams were well matched, each side forcing the ball only once. It was well after half-time when the home team scored the only try of the day, and failed to convert it. This win should bring Okaihau into the final match against Maromaku for the shield. They certainly have no excuse for losing this match, and should have no occasion to seek one, as the only two games played against Maromaku left them victorious by a good margin. That they de-

serve to win there is no doubt whatsoever. The men, though light, arc quick and fairly accurate players, and, taking into consideration the difference between them and the senior team as regards experience, age and weight, they show vast superiority of play. Athletic Club Dance. An exceptionally successful dance was held in the Commerce Hall recently in aid of the Okaihau Athletic Club. There rvere approximately eighty couples present, and comfortable dancing was out of the question. The floor was in perfect order. Cos. Wright’s band, noted for its superb old time waltz tunes and snappy jazzs, was once more very much in evidence.

Ati otlio i- fancy dress ball is to he held in the same hall on .Friday, the 12th inst., in support of the construction of tennis courts at the East End school. The work is to be given to the unemployed, and, for that reason alone, it should be a success. Music will be supplied by Mrs Edwards, Miss M. Huggins, pianist and violinist respectively, both of Kaikohc, and Mr Trotter, saxophonist, Okaihau,
