MEETING OF BOARD. FIREWOOD FOR UNEMPLOYED, GROUND FOR POTATO PLOTS. Tlio Whan gave! High School Board of Governors met last evening, the ehairman, Mr. IT. G. Rishworth, presiding. A circular letter was received stating that it was necessary for boards to get the approval of the Minister for expenditure on repair and maintenance work to school buildings. In cases where small work of an immediate nature arose, and where delay might cause .further damage, however, boards 'were given authority to have the work done, and afterwards to submit the cost to the Minister. “I am glad to see that they recognise that some damage might be done while we arc waiting for work to be approved,” said the ehairman. Small Farm Land. The Unemployment Board wrote stating that the Kioreroa block, which the board had submitted for the small farm scheme, had been given to the executive officer for consideration. A letter from the Citizens’ Relief Committee stated that the committee would be glad if the board granted permission for firewood for needy families to be taken from the High School reserve at Otaika. Mr. Rislnvorth said firewood was being offered by some residents outside the district, and on the reserve there was a lot of dead timber which he thought the board might donate. It Avas pointed out by Mr. Higginson that there was a good deal of teatree near the Otaika Valley Road, and he thought it could be cleared out, providing no ornamental trees were touched. “I think the main thing is to have someone there when the place is inspected by the unemployed,’ ’ said the chairman. Mr. ITigginson’s motion, that the committee be asked to get in touch with the board’s ranger to see that no ornamental trees were destroyed, was carried. No Applications Received. Another matter in connection with unemployment was raised by the chairman, who said he had been approached by the president of the Unemployed Association, with a request that part of the school grounds sloping away from the railway line be allowed for potato growing by the unemployed. As no applications were before the meeting, however, the matter was left in the hands of the chairman with power to act, should any applications be ,made. Principal’s Report. The report of the Principal, Mr. A. R. Ryder, was adopted. In it the Principal stated that the pictures benefit had enabled 33 fine prints to be obtained. Some of these could at once be framed, and they would make a nice start. Mr. Ryder also pointed out that the school needed to develop tuition in agriculture to a larger extent, especially as some of the city schools were offering a course in that direction. He requested that application be made for further equipment for agricultural and also electrical study. It was decided to ask- the Principal to make a detailed list of instruments required and then to make application to the department. Drainage Question. The question of drainage at the junior school was also considered. The chairman said that a faulty system had recently caused a quagmire under the building. The trouble had been fixed temporarily, but the hostel committee, thinking something more permanent should be done, had hail a scheme prepa red. The plans for a scheme were before the board, but it Was decided that the hostel committee should meet the designer on the ground and obtain further information. The matter was an urgent one, and he thought, if something could bo finalised the work could well be done during the term holidays.
