A tragedy is believed to Lave marred the opening of the shooting season in Waipukurau yesterday. It is almost certain that' . .Inm.es--George Symes, aged 20, and Alan— Symes, aged 21, brothers, of Waipuknrau, were drowned in Purhmi Lake, near Wanstead. The two brothers went out ‘early , yesterday morning in a flat-bottomed boat to set their “hide.” Their departure was witnessed byother shooters, but nothing further was seen of them. Later in the morning the interest of two other shooters, Messrs Ernest Me- : Nutt and Alan Guthrie, was aroused by the fact that ducks were seen • swimming in the vicinity of Symes 7 decoys without being shot. The men became apprehensive and made inves* turned and no sign of the owners, tigation.
