Further particulars of the drowning accident at Muriwai beach on Sunday, when Mr -.1, -Tyrrel,- a member of the crew of the cable steamer Recorder, lost his life, were received at the Auckland Cable Office yesterday,- IL was .pointed blit that no attempt was made, to send the 'whaleboat ashore. It was manoeuvring outside the surf, waiting for a chance to fire a rocket ashore, hut was caught in the breakers -and capsized.
Attempts to transfer the shore end, of the cable to the Muriwai beach were, continued yesterday morning. A light line-was carried out from the beach by aeroplane. A cork -jacket was tied to the seaward end, and the, line was. picked up by the Recorder’s launch. lt : was used to haul a. heavier . line from the vessel to. the shore, and this heavier line in turn, will be used to haul the heavy cable ashore. The shore end oi the cable has to be carried inland some distance to the cable hut. 1 ; Officials in Auckland were unable to say yesterday how long the Recorder’s operations at Muriwai will last. When the shore end of the cable has been secured the vessel will lay the cable to a point 80 miles off the coast, and then proceed to a point west of Cook Strait to pick up the Sydney-Wolliugton cable, which will be joined to the: section off Muriwai. ::v
