CROQUET
ANNUAL COMPETITIONS. WIIANGAREI LAWNS. * The annual Anniversary Day tournament of the Whaugarei Croquet Club was opened at the club’s' lawns with a short address by the president, Mrs. Baigcnt. In welcoming the visitors, the president commented on the large number of entries, which were quite equal to those of last year. Owing to the financial stress, tho committee had been very dubious regarding tho advisability of holding the tournament this year, and it was only after very mature consideration that it had decided to do so. That this decision was ■ fully justified was apparent from the fine gathering on the lawns. Mrs. Baigcnt specially welcomed the 1 visitors from Rawenc, as these ladies were entirely new to tournament play, this being their first effort away from i homo. She hoped that tho ■■ Northern ladies would find their trip sufficiently pleasant to make the visit an annual recurrence. Results of yesterday’s play are as follow: — Championship Singles.
