YOUNG HELPERS’ LEAGUE.
ENTERTAINMENT AT MANGAPAI. The public hall at Mangapai was filled to capacity on Friday evening, when a concert and dance was held in aid of the Young Helpers * League of Barnard©’s Homes. The entertainment, which was organised by Mrs Green and Miss MePhee, was in every way a great success. A concert party consisting of Mrs Mervyn Wilson, Miss C j McMillan,. Misses L, and M. Broughton-Carr, Miss Freda Lacey and Messrs H. Parker and A. Cameron went out from Whangarei and had a great reception. An excellent programme was given, ■which fully merited the appreciation shown by the audience, each musical item being heartily encored, in some eases doubly, while two short plays, admirably acted by Misses Broughton-Carr and Miss M. MePhee, were received with great applause..
During the dance which followed, two folk dances were daintily executed by Mangapai schoolgirls, who made a pretty picture in their fancy dresses of yellow and green. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies of tßfc district, after which dancing was indulged in until a late hour.
At the conclusion of the concert programme, Mr J. Sloane,, who presided, made a brief speech thanking the visitors for tffe enjoyable entertainment , they had provided.; He also stated that the concert this year replaces the Y.H.L, annual picnic, which Mrs Green has organised for the past 15 years in aid of trhis deserving charity, and he congratulated the organisers on the very satisfactory financial result of their endeavour.
WEDDED 65 YEARS. MR AND MI?S W. KNIGHT. (Special to “Northern Advocate.’’) AUCKLAND, This Day. The platinum wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs. W. Knight was celebrated on Thursday at their residence, Mount Eden Road. They were married 05 years ago in the Parish Church at Oadby, Leicestershire',, and later came, to New Zealand with five children. Mr Knight followed his trade of bricklaying and afterwards went into market gardening and fruit growing at Avondale, retiring 25 years ago. Mr and Mrs Knight have twice visited England., Mr Knight has been a Sunday school teacher and Band of Hope worker for 50 years. His brother, Mr George Knight, until recently a member of the Auckland City Council, was best man at the w r edding 65 years ago, and the bridegroom’s sister, still living in England, was bridesmaid. Mr and Mrs W. Knight have the following children: Mr Albert Knight, Pa Road, Epsom; Mrs J. Anderson, Esplanade Road, Mount Eden; and the Misses C. and B. Knight, who live with their parents.
