WORKERS DISMISSED
WAITING FOR THEIR PAY. (Special to "Northern Advocate.”) DARGAVILLE, This Day. A large number of men were waiting yesterday about the town for pay which is due to them for relief work at Whatoro and Donnelly's Crossing. About 60 men, many of them married, with children, who had been engaged by the Public Works Department, were discharged on Saturday with only a few days' warning. No reason was given for dismissal, and the men are much concerned because no provision has been made for future work, anil they had not been paid when work ceased. Many were without money, and could not pay the fares to return to their homes.
The men placed the position before the Mayor of Dargaville, Mr E, A. Jones, who telegraphed to the Rt. Hon. J. 6. Coates, Minister in Charge of Unemployment, pointing out that local bodies in the district could not place the men under the No. 5 scheme, and urging that something be done. Mr Coates reply is to hand. Ho states that he is making immediate in quiry into the position and will advise later.
